Northwest’s Melissa Coyle Named Utah Teacher of the Year Runner-Up!

We’re thrilled to celebrate Melissa Coyle, Northwest Middle School’s inspiring art teacher, for being named a runner-up for the Utah Teacher of the Year!
Ms. Coyle teaches Art II, Ceramics I & II, and Advanced Art, and her classroom is a vibrant, inclusive space where students find both creative freedom and emotional support. She believes every student is an artist and helps them use art to process their experiences, tell their stories, and discover who they are.
She’s known for designing culturally responsive and trauma-informed lessons that make students feel seen, valued, and safe. Her projects connect art to identity and community, giving students the tools to advocate for themselves and others.
Beyond her classroom, Ms. Coyle supports new teachers, collaborates across departments, and contributes to district and statewide art education leadership.
Northwest is proud to have such a passionate, hard-working, and deeply caring educator shaping the lives of our students through art. Congratulations, Ms. Coyle—you represent the very best of education!
