Northwest Middle School Celebrates Major Drop in Absenteeism!

Northwest Middle School is celebrating a major achievement in reducing chronic absenteeism, lowering the rate from 42 percent to just 10-12 percent! This success stems from creating a welcoming environment where students feel connected. Reaching this goal required implementing targeted interventions to address absences.

The school’s use of the Ron Clark Academy’s house system has been a key factor. Every student and staff member belongs to one of four houses—Isibindi, Nukumori, Onraka, or Sollevare—each representing different colors, symbols, and cultural backgrounds. The house system encourages friendly competition, with rewards such as field trips or school parties for the house with the lowest absentee rates.

When absences do occur, Northwest takes a proactive approach. The attendance secretary checks in with families, offering support and assistance to overcome barriers. If absences persist, students and parents work with counselors to set goals, with a reward system in place to motivate improvement. Continued issues lead to involvement from school administrators.

Reducing chronic absenteeism has been a community-wide effort, and the benefits are clear. With more students regularly attending school, teachers and staff can focus on academic and social growth instead of just getting students through the door. The success is a testament to the school’s commitment to building strong relationships and providing every student with the opportunity to thrive.

This achievement is an important milestone in creating a positive school climate that benefits both students and staff. Congratulations to Northwest Middle School for this significant accomplishment!
