Northwest Country Store: A Real-World Math Simulation
In Ms. Maeble's math classes, students engaged in an interactive simulation called "Northwest Country Store." During the activity, students purchased food items and calculated the total cost by applying discounts and the Utah state tax. Students then determined and presented the exact change at the cash register. This engaging exercise fostered both enthusiasm and active participation in learning match concepts. The students had a lot of fun!
Students Learn about the Pythagorean Theorem Converse!
Math teacher Dani Maeble asked students to make up a word that required the solver to use the Pythagorean Theorem Converse. Then each student walked around the room and solved each other’s word problems. It was very fun to see how they worked through each other’s work. Have your student explain the Pythagorean Theorem Converse!
Math Students Learn about Graphing
Students in Ms. De Freitas' math classes have been learning how to calculate the slope of a line on a graph. Students learned that the slope of a line describes how steep a line is. Slope is the change in y values divided by the change in x values. This is called rise over run. Finding slope is a fundamental algebra concept.
Eighth Grade Math Students Participate in Hour of Code
Eighth grade math students participated in the national Hour of Code. Hour of Code is celebrated around the world every December. It is a one-hour introduction to computer science, using fun tutorials to show that anybody can learn the basics. Participation allows students to be exposed to easy coding to see if this is something they would like to pursue in the future. Be sure to ask your 8th grader about their experience!
