Two  Teams CompeteChallenge the Process Robotics Team

On January 11, Northwest Middle School’s First Lego League teams competed at the Salt Lake Community College.  Each Challenge has three parts: the Robot Game, the Innovation Project, and the Core Values. The Innovation Project tasked teams to build a better world through the City Shaper challenge. One Northwest team focused on the Animal Adoption Center, while the other team focused in the Salt Lake City Rescue Mission.  Both teams worked to improve the respective buildings for aesthetics and use.  Congratulations to the team—Challenge the Process—who ranked 7th in the Robot Game! FIRST LEGO Robotics League at Northwest!

Northwest Middle School is the only middle school in Salt Lake School District that offers FIRST LEGO Robotics League as an elective. Woot!  Woot!  The League is in their second year. FIRST LEGO League is an international competition organized for First Lego Robotics Serves Rescue Mission Clientselementary and middle school students.  Each year in August, FIRST LEGO League introduces a scientific and real-world challenge for teams to focus and research on.  Each Challenge has three parts:  the Robot Game, the Innovation Project, and the Core Values. When students are engaged in hands-on STEM experiences, they build confidence, grow their knowledge and develop habits of learning. Students are encouraged to try, fail, and try again, while connecting STEM concepts to real-world examples.

Educator Jill Littlefield is coaching student teams in programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field [Robot Game] and in developing a solution to an identified problem [Cityscapes Project].  The teams are guided by the Core Values set by FIRST LEGO League.

Core Values

  • Discovery: We explore new skills and ideas.

  • Innovation: We use creativity and persistence to solve problems.

  • Impact: We apply what we learn to improve our world.

  • Inclusion: We respect each other and embrace our differences.

  • Teamwork: We are stronger when we work together.

  • Fun: We enjoy and celebrate what we do!

For the Innovative Project, Littlefield’s teams decided to renovate the Rescue Mission building to make it more eye appealing to the community and functional inside. To that end, the Robotic teams took a field trip on a Saturday to the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake on a fact-finding mission.  Students served the clients and shared their design ideas with the Rescue Mission staff.  Students enjoyed the experience so much, they want to return again to volunteer!
